Alzheimer's and Your DNA: What Science Reveals About Genetic Risk

Research suggests that an individual's genetic makeup can have a tremendous impact on their susceptibility to developing Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, an individual's genes can even impact how the disease progresses once someone is diagnosed.

What are some of the genes that have been linked to Alzheimer’s disease? What are some other genetic risk factors? What does genetic testing look like when it comes to understanding one’s Alzheimer’s risk? Scroll down to find out the answers to these questions and more.

APOE Gene

When it comes to late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, which means when the disease develops after the age of 65, the APOE Gene has been shown to have the strongest link. There are variants of the gene that are related to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease earlier in life. The fibronectin gene shows a decreased risk of developing the disease.

Early Onset Azheimer’s Disease

About 5% of Alzheimer’s disease cases occur before the age of 65. These are considered early-onset Alzheimer’s disease cases. There are particular gene mutations that are linked to early onset of the disease.

Genetic Variants

There are some other genetic variants that might contribute to one’s overall risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. These genes may impact metabolism, cholesterol, and immune function, among other things.

Genetic Counseling and Testing

Genetic testing is not currently recommended for the wider population when it comes to Alzheimer’s disease as it can be very complex and can lead to emotional distress.

There is still much that is unknown about the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, especially on an individual basis. Alzheimer’s disease is also highly multifactorial, meaning that research indicates many lifestyle factors influence both the development and progression of the disease.

Exercise, social engagement, and diet can all impact one’s risk factors, even with a genetic propensity. Genetic testing only shows one aspect of a very complex picture. If one opts for genetic testing, it is highly recommended to see a genetic counselor.

Therapies, Research, Clinical Trials

Understanding the genetic factors related to Alzheimer’s disease is a crucial area of research focus. The goal of Alzheimer’s and dementia research is to develop new strategies for preventing the disease and developing new treatments for individuals impacted by it. The better the genetic structure of Alzheimer’s disease is understood, the more effective these therapies can become.
