An Alzheimer’s Diagnosis Can Be Isolating

Recent research confirms that loneliness and social isolation are risk factors for Alzheimer’s and other forms of cognitive decline. Sadly, Alzheimer’s disease itself can further cause isolation. At times, friends and family don't know how to best engage with the Alzheimer’s affected individual and avoid engaging altogether. Other times, the individual experiences anxiety and depression related to their diagnosis, which can cause them to become increasingly withdrawn and avoid social situations.

As the journal below indicates, there are support groups for Alzheimer’s impacted individuals. It can go a long way to be able to interact with people facing a similarly difficult situation. Friends and family can also attend such groups to experience camaraderie and support amid a loved one’s Alzheimer’s journey. Seeking out social connection and help is essential to well-being.

Alzheimer’s Journal

Below are some journal reflections on loneliness from an individual newly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease…

As I reflect on the thoughts and feelings that are swirling in my heart and mind, I realize that I’m hurt, for lack of a better word. I also feel overwhelmed. In terms of feeling hurt, it touches a few different areas. I’m just writing out my thoughts, then will parse through what I actually share with anyone. I generally feel alone juggling many aspects of my new Alzheimer’s diagnosis. It seems like friends and family have disappeared into the woodwork. They get so awkward around me and unsure of how to talk to me. The sense of isolation adds considerable stress to the challenges I’m already facing. I already felt pretty lonely before I was diagnosed. Now, loneliness feels greater than ever.

I do have a very supportive doctor and the nurses at the clinic are always so kind. The next time I’m there, maybe I’ll share more about the loneliness I’ve been feeling. I saw a flier for a support group on the bulletin board at the doctor’s office. That might be a good place to start for finding some people who understand what I’m going through and won’t become so awkward when I talk about Alzheimer’s.
